Hungary in Global Colonialism: Race, Decolonialism, and the Transperiphery Movement
Keynote speaker: Zoltán Ginelli, critical geographer and global historian
Abstract: Public and academic discussions have completely ignored the fact that the recent wave of anti-racism and decololonization movements have sparked intensive reactions from Eastern European countries, including Hungary, for the first time. These reactions dominantly focused on Western events but never actually defined decolonialism, nor looked at the global, geographical implications of colonialism. In Hungary, the local relevance of racism and decolonialism has been framed in a rather reductive manner (anti-Semitism, conditions of Romas), and there have been no serious discussions about the country’s specific historical relations to global colonialism, or any criticism of Eurocentric and racist knowledge. The presentation explores these issues and argues for Hungarian relevance to decolonization, and introduces in this context the main concept of a forthcoming exhibition project, The Transperiphery Movement.
Zoltán Ginelli is a geographer and historian of science. His research is in the geographies of knowledge, global and transnational history, colonialism and race in Eastern Europe, and the historical relations between Eastern Europe and the Third World. He taught and lectured at various universities and colleges, worked as teacher and mentor at Milestone Institute, and between 2015 and 2019 worked as an assistant researcher in the 1989 After 1989 and the Socialism Goes Global international research projects at the University of Exeter. His current project at the University of Leipzig, Postcolonial Hungary explores Hungarian global historical relations to coloniality from a world-systemic perspective.

Short resume: With a focus on the role of art and artists’ work, the talk examines the research exhibition Transperiphery Movement: Global Eastern Europe and Global South (curated by Eszter Szakács and Zoltán Ginelli)—as well as its broader theoretical-artistic contexts—that will be presented at OFF-Biennale Budapest 2021. What historical art networks existed between Eastern Europe and the Global South and how can these historical relations be conceptualized today? How can art make historical materials relevant for the present?

Orsolya Polyacsko, sociologist
Orsolya Polyacskó is pursuing her PhD studies at Corvinus University of Budapest in
sociology. Her research topic is participatory action research with third country nationals living in Hungary. Orsolya has worked with a number of civil society organisations in the past years, currently she is involved in the work of the Ferencváros Community Foundation, a grassroots and independent NGO dedicated to fostering local philanthropy and community development in Budapest’s 9th district, and coordinates a project that seeks to promote the inclusion of foreigners connected to Budapest’s 9th district.

Frederick Odorige, activist, writer and evangelist
Frederick Odorige is a doctoral candidate of Military Science at the National University of Public Service Budapest. He is an Activist, Writer and Evangelist. He is the President of the Association of Nigerians in Hungary; President of the Nelson Mandela Human rights association Hungary; Founder and Global Coordinator of the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria with chapters in 40 countries and 20 Nigerian states.

Ginelli Zoltán: Magyarország a globális kolonializmusban: Rassz, dekolonializmus és a Transzperiféria Mozgalom
Absztrakt: A közéleti és tudományos diskurzusban teljesen háttérbe szorult az a tény, hogy az utóbbi tüntetéssorozatok eredményeként az antirasszista és dekolonialista mozgalmak először váltottak ki intenzív reakciókat a kelet-európai országokban, köztük Magyarországon is. Azonban ezek a reakciók többnyire a nyugati eseményekkel foglalkoztak és sem a dekolonializmus lényegét, sem a kolonializmus globális, földrajzi vonatkozásait nem vizsgálták érdemben. Magyarországon a rasszizmus és a dekolonizáció helyi relevanciáját rendkívül szűk társadalmi és történelmi keretben közelítették meg (pl. antiszemitizmus, romák helyzete), és nem foglalkoztak az ország globális kolonializmushoz való történelmi viszonyával, ahogyan az ehhez kapcsolódó eurocentrikus és rasszista tudás kritikájával sem. Az előadás ezen szempontok mentén érvel a dekolonizáció magyarországi relevanciája mellett, és ehhez kapcsolódóan mutatja be a Transzperiféria Mozgalom kiállítási projekt fő koncepcióját.
Ginelli Zoltán geográfus tudománytörténész. Kutatásai során tudásföldrajzzal, globális és transznacionális történelemmel, a rassz és kolonializmus kelet-európai vonatkozásaival, illetve a Kelet-Európa és a Harmadik világ közötti történeti kapcsolatokkal foglalkozik. Számos egyetemen és kollégiumban tanított vagy tartott előadást, tanárként és mentorként dolgozott a Milestone Intézetben, 2015 és 2019 között pedig kutató asszisztensként dolgozott az 1989 után 1989 (1989 After 1989) és a Globalizálódó szocializmus (Socialism Goes Global) nemzetközi kutatási projektekben az Exeteri Egyetemen. A Lipcsei Egyetemen futó Posztkoloniális Magyarország című kutatási projektje világrendszer-elemző megközelítésben vizsgálja Magyarország globális történelmi kapcsolatait a gyarmatosításhoz.

Rövid összefoglaló: A művészet szerepére összpontosítva az a előadás a Transzperiféria Mozgalom: Globális Kelet-Európa és a Globális Dél című kiállítást (kurátorok: Szakács Eszter és Ginelli Zoltán), valamint tágabb elméleti-művészeti összefüggéseit vizsgálja, amely a 2021-es OFF-Biennálén kerül bemutatásra. Milyen művészeti hálózatok léteztek Kelet-Európa és a Globális Dél között, és hogyan lehet ezeket a történelmi kapcsolatokat ma értelmezni? Hogyan képes a művészet a múlt eseményeit a jelen számára relevánssá tenni?
